After John Cena and Booker T's best of five (5) series ended with John Cena winning the WWE United States (US) Championship at No Mercy 2004, the next week on SmackDown we would see the debut of Carlito Caribbean Cool (later renamed to Carlito) where he would say to John Cena that it took him 5 (five) matches to become the United States Champion but he could do it in only 1 (one) match leading to John Cena challenging Carlito right there and then to prove that theory right or wrong before Carlito would decline the offer to do the match right there and then because "that's not cool" but Carlito would accept the match for the main event and to gain the advantage/upper hand over John Cena, Carlito would DDT John Cena and spit in his face after biting his signature apple leaving Cena humiliated. John Cena vs Carlito later on that night in the SmackDown main event for the WWE United States Championship would end with Carlito winning in his debut match after he would try to use the belt to hit Cena but Cena ended up taking it away from Carlito making the referee have to deal with Cena so he didn't use the title as a weapon otherwise the match would've ended in disqualification (this was not a no DQ match) allowing for Carlito to take John Cena's chain off of the ring post and with the referee's back turned, he would hit Cena with the chain, knocking him out for the pin and win making Carlito the new WWE United States Champion. The following week on SmackDown, SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long would announce to the rest of the SmackDown roster that John Cena was involved in an incident at an after hours nightclub which was later revealed as John Cena being stabbed leaving him with several puncture wounds including one to a vital organ, the kidneys. After Carlito would successfully defend the US Title versus Rey Mysterio on that same night, he would be questioned by Teddy Long a week later about his involvement in the nightclub stabbing incident which Carlito would say he wasn't involved because he didn't want to be around "thugs". During all of this, the upcoming Survivor Series event was incoming where one of the traditional Survivor Series elimination matches was Team Guerrero (Eddie Guerrero, Big Show, Rob Van Dam, and John Cena) vs Team Angle (Kurt Angle, Carlito, Luther Reigns, and Mark Jindrak) and Eddie Guerrero would reveal to Team Angle that their 4th (fourth) man was a returning John Cena leaving Carlito and Jesús shocked. This angered Carlito so much that he tried to get Teddy Long to not allow John Cena to be on the team leading to Teddy Long revealing that the authorities told him that not only was Carlito at the nightclub where the John Cena stabbing incident occurred but his bodyguard Jesús was also at the nightclub who already had a criminal record. At Survivor Series 2004, John Cena would make his return and immediately make a beeline to Carlito and Jesús to get his revenge where they would brawl past Eddie Guerrero's low-rider, up the ramp, to the backstage, and into the parking lot where Cena would manage to throw Jesús over a car before both Carlito and Jesús drove away in any car that worked despite John Cena attempting to break the car window by smacking it. The next week on SmackDown, John Cena would reveal that he would be getting his WWE United States Title rematch on that very night in the main event which seen John Cena successfully regain the US Title from Carlito who had a shoulder injury but after the match, Carlito's bodyguard Jesús would steal John Cena's chain just like Carlito did originally in his debut match to hit John Cena in the back, specifically targeting his punctured kidneys that was the result of the melee/stabbing in the nightclub. This rivalry/feud would end at Armageddon 2004 when it was John Cena vs Jesús with Carlito in a street fight which saw John Cena retain his WWE United States Championship (John Cena's spinner title, US Championship version) and get his chain back from Carlito ending their rivalry/feud.
