World Health Organization Officially Names Coronavirus Covid-19

The new virus that emerged from China has officially been named Covid-19, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Tuesday.

In the press conference, he explained that the the name was an amalgam of the words 'corona', 'virus' and 'disease'.

"Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatising," Ghebreyesus said.

According to the WHO, there were 42,708 confimed cases of the virus in China and 1,017 deaths as of 0500 GMT on Tuesday morning.

Outside China, 393 cases had been reported in 24 countries, alongside one death.
