Budget airline TigerAir is trying to contact hundreds of passengers from multiple flights who have potentially been exposed to coronavirus as an international public health emergency is declared.

The passengers travelled on 13 different flights on the same TigerAir aircraft to destinations including Cairns, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth since Monday.

There are nine confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in Australia, including two people in Queensland who flew on TigerAir.

Earlier, the World Health Organisation declared the virus a public health emergency. Infections have surpassed the SARS outbreak in the early 2000s and many nations are evacuating their citizens from China.
